Senate requests the UK government remove Nigeria from COVID-19 Red List

The Nigerian Senate has denounced the United Kingdom’s unjustified placing of Nigeria on the COVID-19 red list. The Upper further requested the Federal Government to work with British authorities to have Nigeria removed from the red list.

​These were among the conclusions made by the chamber following discussion of a motion on the “Need for the Government of the United Kingdom to remove Nigeria from the COVID-19 Red List.” Under Senate Rules 42 and 52, Senator Ike Ekweremadu observed with pleasure the efforts of the Government of Nigeria in the containment and treatment of COVID-19 patients.

According to him, Nigeria is one of the countries with the fewest incidences of COVID-19.

In his remarks, Senate President Ahmad Lawan stated that Nigeria’s inclusion on the UK COVID-19 red list puts pressure on bilateral diplomatic ties.

As a result, the Upper Chamber requested that the British Parliament intervene in order to have Nigeria removed from the country’s COVID-19 red list.
