Lawan: Erring Oil Companies Must Be Punished for Negligence

Ahmad Lawan, President of the Senate, has urged the federal government, through its competent institutions, to sanction indigenous oil corporations accountable for the damage to host communities where they operate.

Lawan made the plea in his closing remarks after the Senate debated a motion on the critical need to halt the ongoing crude oil and gas blowout leak at Santa Barbara well 1, OML 29 operated by AITEO Eastern Exploration and Production Company Limited in Opu Nembe, Bayelsa State.

Senator Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo, while speaking under Senate Rules 42 and 52, expressed concern about the continuous gushing and spewing of oil and gas into the waterways and mangrove vegetation of Bayelsa state from a long-sealed, non-producing oil well 1, Santa Barbara OML 29 owned by AITEO Eastern Exploration and Production Company Limited.

Senator George Thompson Sekibo noted that numerous Niger Delta states are contaminated with soot as a result of oil firms’ gross neglect.

As a result, he urged the federal government to act by reining in the excesses of such enterprises operating in the region.

The Senate President, for his part, stated that the National Assembly will ensure that firms fulfill their legal corporate-social duties to host communities.
