Nigerian businessman shot dead in a Restaurant in Johannesburg, South Africa

Brown Donatus, a 39-year old Nigerian, was killed in a restaurant at Johannesburg, South Africa on Tuesday, February 22, 2022. Donatus, who hailed from Ibiono-Ibom in Akwa Ibom, was shot dead after a team of armed robbers stormed a restaurant where he was a patron. 

According to his aunt, who resides in Nigeria, the armed robbers collected peoples phones, then descended on Brown and fired him, he died on the spot.

Brown’s relative, Mrs. Mary Donatus, said Brown has been in South Africa for 15 years. She received a phone call that Brown was in danger, “a friend of his called and said we should be praying for Brown, that his life was in danger. A few minutes later, we started receiving Brown’s pictures in the pool of his blood.”

“Brown was hoping to celebrate his 40th birthday on March 28, 2022, unaware that his life would be cut short,” she said.

In a report from news24.com, “JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said officers responded to an armed robbery at a restaurant at the corner of Lilian Ngoyi and Nugget streets when the robbers opened fire on them.”

During the raid at the restaurant in the Johannesburg CBD on Tuesday night, a 30-year-old Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officer was wounded and a customer was shot dead.

According to the police spokesperson, Xolani Fihia, the officer was rushed to the hospital after sustaining injury from the attack. The police officer will undergo surgery to remove the bullet from his thigh.

Two suspects have been apprehended after the police officers manhunt. Two firearms with live ammunition, a knife, and a telephone, he added, were seized by the officers.

Brown’s families said they have been receiving contradicting reports, she said “why did the armed robbers not go to the restaurant counter and rob, they only came to Brown, collected his phone and shot him.”
