Xi Jinping, China’s president, has called for ‘maximum restraint’ in Ukraine

In his strongest statement on the situation to date, Chinese President Xi Jinping urged “maximum restraint” in Ukraine and said China is “painful to see the flames of war fanned in Europe,” according to official media.

According to Chinese official broadcaster CCTV, Xi said the three countries should collectively promote peace talks between Russia and Ukraine during a virtual conference with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

According to CCTV, Xi called the situation in Ukraine “worrying” and stated that the objective should be to prevent it from growing or “spinning out of control.”

He also stated that France and Germany should work to mitigate the crisis’ harmful effects, and expressed concern about the impact of sanctions on global financial stability, energy supplies, transportation, and supply networks.
