In a press release issued on Wednesday, the Lagos State government announced that it has partnered with the National Primary Health Care Development Agency to launch a Polio Outbreak Response (OBR) campaign in all Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas of the state. This move comes after discovering circulating variant poliovirus strains in some areas of the state.
Nigeria was declared free of Wild Polio Virus (WPV) in August 2020 after going three consecutive years without a case of WPV. However, the virus has risen in some states across Nigeria due to low routine immunization coverage.
The OBR campaign aims to vaccinate all children aged 0 to 5 years with two doses of the oral polio vaccine, regardless of their previous vaccination status, in order to prevent poliomyelitis and its associated complications, such as paralysis or death. The campaign will take place between January 21st and January 24th, 2023, during which vaccination teams will visit residential homes, schools, churches, mosques, gated communities, and other public places where eligible children may be found.
The Lagos State government is urging all parents, guardians, community leaders, pastors, and imams to ensure that all eligible children are vaccinated during the campaign. Routine Immunization Services will also be available at Primary Health Centers during the campaign. All children under the age of 2 years are urged to complete their routine immunization as scheduled. The government emphasized that immunization is effective, safe, and free.
The press release was signed by Dr Ibrahim Akinwunmi Mustafa, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board.
