Jigi-Bola Relaunch: Hope Rises For Patients In Lagos Who Are Visually Impaired

Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has revealed that his administration has made sufficient arrangements through the Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu/Kadri Obafemi Hamzat (BOSKOH) Healthcare Mission International to conduct a free sight and hearing aid screening exercise on residents across Local Government Councils in the State to ensure that residents do not lose their vision and hearing organs when it could have been avoided.

The Governor, who was represented by his deputy, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, said today during the Flag-Off of the Jigi-Bola Re-launch and 4th Edition of BOSKOH Healthcare Mission International Free Medical Outreach held at the Police College, Ikeja, that his administration is dedicated to making Lagosians smile and advancing their well-being and welfare as enshrined in the T.H.E.M.E.S. Agenda.

“This free sight and hearing aid program taking place today is aimed at improving and strengthening the state’s capacity for efficient eye and ear care delivery at the grassroots level and to ensure that Lagosians do not lose their visual and auditory faculties when this could have been avoided,” Sanwo-Olu said.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over two billion people suffer from near- or far-sightedness, and the governor claimed that at least one billion of these instances, or over half, could have been avoided.

In order to prevent Lagosians from losing their visual and auditory faculties when this could have been prevented, Sanwo-Olu said, “This free sight and hearing aid program taking place today is aimed at improving and strengthening the state’s capacity for efficient eye and ear care delivery at the grassroots level.”

The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that over two billion people have near- or farsightedness, and the governor asserted that over half of these cases, or at least one billion, could have been averted.

The International Centre for Eye Health has estimated that about 2.7 million adults in Nigeria who are 40 years of age or older have moderate vision impairment, while an additional 400,000 people have severe visual impairment.
Early detection, treatment, and other medical measures can avoid vision and hearing issues before they worsen. We must therefore reiterate our commitment to enhancing the welfare and well-being of our beloved population in order to continue in this direction with the BOSKOH Lagos Healthcare Mission International, “he said.

The Jigi-Bola Initiative is intended to strengthen the state’s capacity for effective eye-care delivery at the grassroots level, according to the first lady of Lagos State, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, who also said the initiative will continue to be a legacy that will help reduce visual impairment to the barest, especially among the good people of Lagos State.

According to Dr. Sanwo-Olu, this year’s program would assist around 250,000 Lagosians across eight local government districts, community sites, eight market locations, and eight police barracks.

The first lady mentioned the government’s initiatives to address vision impairments in the state and mentioned the BOSKOH Lagos Healthcare Mission. To engage the good people of Lagos State and identify residents who require visual aids, a team of medical professionals—including doctors, nurses, optometrists, auditors, and health records officials, among other allied medical professions—will test eligible individuals for prescription glasses.

She therefore urged Lagosians, especially those suffering from visual impairments, to take advantage of the Jigi-Bola Initiative to improve their health, noting that a large number of cases of visual impairment could have been prevented if they were detected early and treated effectively.

In her remarks, the Chief Executive Officer, BOSKOH Healthcare Initiative, Mrs. Nike Osa, stated that the BOSKOH Health Mission has recorded significant milestones since its inception in 2019 as they have continued to render free medical and humanitarian services to citizens in the state.

She continued by saying that the initiative’s primary goal is to guarantee that those who cannot afford medical care receive free care through its prompt intervention.

Additionally, Osa stated that beginning immediately and lasting through the end of August, free medical services and screening will be made available to police stations and markets around the state.
