Nigerian Government Declares June 12 as Public Holiday in Celebration of Democracy Day

The Nigerian government has officially declared Monday, June 12, 2023, as a Public Holiday to mark this year’s Democracy Day. The announcement was made by Dr Oluwatoyin Akinlade, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Interior, in a statement released on Thursday, June 8, 2023.

Dr Akinlade extended her congratulations to all Nigerians on behalf of the Federal Government, acknowledging the nation’s democratic journey and the challenges it has faced. She emphasized that despite encountering both turbulent and smooth periods, the ship of the State, its institutions, and, most importantly, the Nigerian people have remained dedicated to the principles of democratic governance.

“On this memorable occasion, therefore, Nigerians and friends of Nigeria are encouraged to reflect on the progress achieved, celebrate the milestones covered, and remain hopeful for a brighter future for the country’s democracy,” Dr Akinlade stated.
