The Nigerian Armed Forces and the entire nation are in mourning following the passing of Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, announced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Lt. General Lagbaja, aged 56, passed away on Tuesday night in Lagos after an illness.
Lt. General Lagbaja’s military journey began in 1987 at the Nigerian Defence Academy. Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1992, he served extensively in the Nigerian Infantry Corps, taking on key roles that defined his remarkable career. His leadership saw him contribute to major internal security operations across Nigeria, including Operations ZAKI, Lafiya Dole, Udoka, and Forest Sanity, efforts that bolstered security in regions facing insurgency and unrest.
Lt. General Lagbaja held a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College, reflecting his dedication to military strategy and leadership. President Tinubu extended his deepest condolences to the family of Lt. General Lagbaja, who is survived by his wife, Mariya, and their two children, and to the Nigerian Armed Forces.
