The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has suspended its ongoing strike. The indefinite strike, which began on October 28, 2024, in response to four months of withheld salaries, disrupted activities in colleges and universities nationwide.
Following the Federal Government’s payment of one out of the four months’ salary arrears on Friday, the JAC, represented by SSANU National President Mohammed Ibrahim and NASU General Secretary Prince Peters Adeyemi, stated on Sunday instructing members to resume work on November 5, 2024. The statement confirmed that further discussions with the government had secured a commitment to pay an additional two months’ worth of arrears staggered.
“This action comes after several engagements with high-level government officials, including the Department of State Services and the Minister of Education,” the unions’ leaders stated. The JAC emphasized that the suspension is for one month, during which ongoing dialogues with the government will address issues including N50 billion in earned allowances, 25–35% arrears, and other compensation matters.
NASU and SSANU branch leaders have been directed to brief members in a joint Congress on November 4 to update them on these developments.
The unions reiterated their call for the full implementation of the 2009 agreements and regular salary payments, which the Federal Government had partially withheld under the “No Work, No Pay” policy introduced during the university union strikes in 2022. The unions also acknowledged their members’ steadfast support throughout the industrial action.
