Resuscitation of Nigeria’s moribund first sugar company

As part of efforts to realize the objectives of the national sugar master plan for the country, the federal government opted for privatization of sugar companies in the country

This is with a view to boosting the value chain in sugar investment, creating job opportunities, self-sufficiency and enhanced sugar production.

Nigeria’s first Sugar company is sited in Bacita, Edu local government area of Kwara State. During the good days, it employed about 40,000 workers before it became moribund.

of the company is important as they believe it has the capacity to contribute to the economy

However, the new private operator during an engagement with the residents of the host community maintains that the sugar company will create jobs through a transformation in the next few months.

Kwara is one of the areas with a comparative advantage in sugar production which can assist in reducing the deficit in sugar consumption. The Nation’s sugar master plan is expected to take advantage of the vast opportunities along the value chain to create jobs, support power through production of ethanol among others. The people hope the plan would soon begin to yield good results
