INEC Announces Voting Framework and IDP Regulations

The Independence National Electoral Commission (INEC) has submitted a draft version of the 2022 amended framework and rule for voting by Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) for approval prior to the general elections of 2023.

Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of the commission, stated during the presentation in Abuja that the commission wanted to include IDPs in the country’s election process and that is why the meeting was held.

He continued by saying that the commission was making the gesture in order to make sure that no eligible Nigerian was excluded from the voting process due to a move, a disability, or any other situation that would have limited participation by the general public.

Seray Cole, the country director for the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), reiterated IFES’ commitment to assist the commission in achieving a smooth participation of the internally displaced persons when necessary and a successful implementation of the framework and regulations.
However, INEC stated that it is prepared to ensure that every eligible Nigerian casts their vote because the election process will be free, fair, and inclusive.
