IGP Orders Nationwide Crackdown on Naira Sale and Abuse: Prosecution Ahead for Violators

Usman Alkali Baba, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), has given the order for people who sell or misuse Central Bank of Nigeria Naira notes to be arrested and charged.

The IGP has tasked the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department and the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of the Force Intelligence Bureau to place their officers on high alert and carry out the arrests.

The IGP has also instructed all supervisory Assistant Inspectors General of Police and Commissioners of Police to enforce the provisions of Sections 20 and 21 of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, which criminalize activities such as the hawking, selling, or trading of Naira notes, counterfeiting, refusal to accept the Naira as payment, and tampering with coins or notes issued by the CBN.

The IGP emphasized the Nigeria Police Force’s mandate to enforce all laws and regulations and called for cooperation from the public as they work to enforce the CBN Act and other relevant laws. The goal is to maintain a well-policed society within the country.
