Delta State, May 17, 2023 – In a major breakthrough in the ongoing battle against crime and criminality, the Delta State Police Command has apprehended a gang of ten suspected kidnappers and recovered a locally made cut-to-size gun. The arrest comes as part of the police’s relentless efforts to tackle the rising cases of armed robbery and kidnapping, particularly along the Sapele-Warri road and its surrounding areas.

Upon assuming duty, the newly appointed Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Wale Abass, identified the alarming increase in armed robberies and kidnappings as a pressing security challenge. In response, he deployed an intelligence unit known as the CP-Decoy squad to conduct a covert and intelligence-led operation. Under the leadership of ASP Julius Robinson, the squad strategically relocated to Sapele and initiated their mission based on credible intelligence gathered from the local community.

During the operation, the squad successfully apprehended Nyero Sunday, a 29-year-old resident of Okwitolo community, along with eight accomplices from Okpe LGA, Delta State. Through meticulous investigation and technical intelligence, the suspects confessed to their involvement in numerous kidnapping and armed robbery incidents, admitting to terrorizing the Sapele-Warri road. The police’s efforts also led to the arrest of Umar Bello, a 33-year-old from Sokoto state residing in Warri. Bello was identified as the buyer of stolen phones and other valuables obtained from the victims. As a result of the operation, law enforcement recovered a Toyota Corolla with the registration number WWR 353 LS, a locally made cut-to-size single-barrel pistol, and eleven rounds of live cartridges. A manhunt is currently underway to apprehend the remaining fugitives.

In a separate incident, on May 15, 2023, police operatives from the ‘B’ Division Warri, led by DPO SP Bolarinwa Alabi, were conducting a visibility and confidence-building patrol along Airport Road. During the patrol, they encountered a tricycle with three male occupants. When the police attempted to stop the tricycle, the rider evaded capture, prompting a pursuit. Eventually, the suspects abandoned the tricycle and fled on foot. One of the individuals, identified as Nworie Emmanuel, a 20-year-old male, was apprehended and taken into custody. During questioning, Emmanuel revealed that he was a member of a three-man armed robbery gang that employed a tricycle as their mode of transportation to rob unsuspecting victims along Airport Road in Warri. He confessed to robbing two individuals earlier that day and disclosed that a fellow gang member named Abdul was in possession of the stolen phone. The gang’s modus operandi involved targeting solitary individuals on dimly lit roads at night, with Abdul brandishing a knife to intimidate and rob the victims. The tricycle and the knife used in their criminal activities have been secured as evidence while authorities continue their efforts to apprehend the remaining gang members.

Additionally, on May 16, 2023, the Delta State Command crack squad conducted a raid in the criminal blackspot located around Osuani in Patani LGA. During the operation, they arrested Priscillia Amor, a 35-year-old female, and confiscated twenty-six wraps of suspected Indian hemp, nineteen wraps of suspected Methamphetamine, eight packets of razlers, several mobile phones, and other related items. Investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend Amor’s associates.
