Child’s Rescue in Lagos Waterway Sparks Urgent Need for Safety Awareness

Eight-year-old Onyeka Umeh was rescued from an open water at the extreme end of Pastor Ojediran Street behind Oba’s Palace in Ejigbo, Lagos by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service on April 25, 2023. According to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, a distress call was made at 15:20 hours, which alerted the Ejigbo Fire Station and the Agency’s Rescue Crew to salvage the sinking boy from the canal.

The young boy, who was picking pet bottles with his friend, trailed the canal to his sinking spot before his companion raised the alarm, leading to his eventual rescue alive. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service handed over the rescued boy to the Police from Ejigbo Division to reunite him with his family.

In light of this incident, Adeseye Margaret, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, has urged parents and guardians to keep a close eye on their children and provide the much-needed guidance to preserve their safety.
