Arsenal winger confirms his contract extension

Back in early June, it became clear George Lewis had signed a contract extension with Arsenal.

The 22-year-old’s previous deal expired this summer, so the fact he wasn’t on the club’s list of released players was confirmation of an extension.

Reports at the time suggested Arsenal had an option for an additional year in Lewis’ old contract, so the assumption was that they’d activated the option.

Yet neither Arsenal nor Lewis ever posted an official update, so we didn’t know for sure until he spoke to the media this week.

“The club chose to activate the option [to extend the contract],” Lewis said (via Arseblog). “I’m really happy they did. If not, I wouldn’t be here.”

The winger hasn’t played consistent minutes since joining Arsenal due to injury, but he believes he’s over that now. He’s hoping to feature regularly this season.

“I broke my ankle and was out for eight to nine months. I got a few minutes here and there for the under-23s at the end of this season, but I didn’t play as many minutes as I wanted.

“I feel fit and ready. The injuries are way behind me and now I only focus on what lies ahead. I’ve had a really good rehabilitation period at Arsenal and really good people around me.

“I just want to play matches. If it’s in Arsenal or on loan at another club, I honestly don’t know.

“There has been some interest around, so a really important decision for my career is coming up, where I’m going to play the next 6 or 12 months.”
